Sphyraena picudilla Sphyraena picudilla Southern sennet There is some question  whether this fish and the northern sennet (S.borealis) are different species.
Strongylura notacta Strongylura notata Redfin needlefish Hangs out in bays and inlets most of its life.  Also it will enter fresh water.
Strongylura timucu Strongylura timucu Timucu Looks much like an Atlantic needlefish (S. marina) except for a stripe behind the eye.
Syngnathus floridae Dusky pipefish When very small, pipefish are not easy to tell apart.  The dusky has a long snout as does the chain.  Body color is mottled but not banded.  Can grow to 10”.  Plentiful in grass flats.
  Dusky pipefish The distinctive snout separates the pipefish from the chain and Gulf pipefishes.
Syngnathus louisianae Chain pipefish Its lower side has a row of diamond-shaped marks.  Note the long snout.  Grows to 15”.  Found mainly in grass beds.

Has a short snout, compared to the chain and dusky.  Also at home in grass flats.  Rarely grows larger than 6”.
 
Synodus foetens Inshore lizardfish A bottom dweller who will burrow in the sand and lie in wait for a meal.  The adult matches the sand background and you may spot it perched on its pectoral fins awaiting a passing meal.
Trachinotus falcatus Permit A member of the jacks and pompanos.  Silvery and flat.  Juveniles have some black markings as well as orange streaks in their lower fins.
Urophycis floridana Southern hake A member of the cod fishes.  It will grow to 12 inches but by that time it will have moved offshore into deep water.
